The 2007 MECA Finals for the Sound Pressure League and Sound Quality League were held
at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville, TN, November 17 and 18, 2007. Commissioner Steve Stern introduced a new award for the
competitor scoring the loudest Drive-By SPL Parade score at World Finals. The new award, named in honor of retired SPL Ambassador Alma
Gates was presented to Eric Alexander of Team Livewire for accomplishing the absolutely ridiculous score of 136.7dB. This score was
an
average score over 30 seconds, NOT a peak score. Further, it was measured from 6 feet away from the vehicle, making the score
(which is 16.7 dB higher than the threshold of pain) even more impressive. Eric was also recognized as the SPL Best of Show winner,
and World Champion in Modex 3 for his score of 162.5 dB measured at the headrest. During Eric's final Drive-by SPL Parade run in the
DB5 class, his windshield cracked due to the extreme pressure levels created inside the vehicle.
At left, Eric stands with the the Alma Gates Cup (click on the picture to see the full image), upon which he will have his name recorded
as the first recipient of the award. Congratulations to Eric on a very successful 2007 MECA Season, and an especially successful 2007
MECA World Finals!

At the 2007 MECA World Finals, a new name was added to the Culbertson Cup, awarded to the highest overall
SQL Score at World Finals. David Timmerman of North Carolina averaged 84.5 points out of 100, barely edging out Matt Roberts of South
Carolina (with an average of 84.2 points) for the Modex+ class win, and SQL Best of Show. The Modex+ class was one of the closest ever
in MECA competition, with all 5 top competitors averaging
MORE than 80 points out of 100. David joins Scott Selvidge and Alma
Gates as receipients of the Culbertson Cup, named in honor of the late Jim Culbertson, MECA SQ competitor and ambassador of good will,
who passed away in 2005.
At left, David stands with the Culbertson Cup (click on the picture to go to a larger view). His Honda CR-X has been competitive for
years in MECA, but after a full system redesign this year, he found the points necessary to take the title. Congratulations to David
for winning a very closely contested Modex+ Class and for winning SQL Best of Show!

Long-time MECA Member, former MECA Judge and Event Director, and Team-Loco President Rick Washabaugh accomplished
a dream at the 2007 MECA World Finals. First, Rick was shocked to win first place in the extremely competitive Sound Quality League
Master Class scoring an impressive 82.3 average. Rick also hit a very loud 153.8 dB in Modex 1 class making him the World Champion in
that class as well. Those first place finishes, combined with the number of competitors he was able to defeat resulted in Rick receiving
the Best-of-Best-of-Show trophy, awarded to the one vehicle that is the most successful in all categories at a particular event.
At left, Rick stands with his 2 seven-foot tall first place trophies, and his slightly taller (and probably most important) trophy for
Best-of-Best-of-Show. His Honda CR-X truly was the best at everything at the 2007 MECA World Finals. Congratulations Rick!

All eyes were on Lee Byerly (Team Phat Hertz) as he watched the 30 bouncing dots on the
AudioControl SA-3055 meter. His system was playing pink noise from the MECA Test CD at 98 dB in the 2nd tie-breaker for his vehicle
in the RTA Freq Out contest at MECA's 2007 World Finals Soundfest in Nashville at the TN State Fairgrounds. He worked hard the entire
season getting ready for this competition, knowing that a $500 prize would be offered to the winner, the World Champ in RTA Freq Out.
AudioControl sponsored the prize and representatives Chris Kane and John Borges watched the proceedings intently, with 9 qualified RTA
Freq Out competitors vying for the Championship and the money.
MECA Judges John Vrooman (VA) and Cory Bradley (IN) conducted the tests on Sunday afternoon, and it was a fitting end to the Sound Quality
League judging, with a small crowd following the team to each vehicle. Lee's score of 37 out of 40 points won the contest and he took
the 6' trophy and $500 check back to his home in Knoxville, IL. He also won the SQL Modex Install World Championship (for the 3rd time)
with a score of 89 points, took 4th place in the Modex+ Sound Quality class with an averaged score of 80.3 points, and was the 2007
Illinois State Champion in Modex+ SQ, Modex Install, and RTA Freq Out. He competes in his 1995 Chevy Cavalier Z24.
Lee has been a MECA member for 3 years and was selected MECA's September 2007 Member of the Month. He has worked as an MECP Installer
at E&I Audio in Galesburg, IL and Circuit City in Peoria, IL. He is now self-employed as an installer for Hughesnet satellite systems.
Here's what he had to say about his big win: I would like to thank AudioControl for the support of MECA’s RTA Freq Out. This years RTA
Freq Out was the most fun and watched audio event I have ever been in. I will be back next season to defend my titles in the RTA Freq
Out and Modex Install. Winning my Install class for the third year in a row was truly amazing. I would also like to thank my sponsors,
ARC Audio and Image Dynamics.
Congratulations to our SPL, SQL, MECA Kids, and Ride the Light Champions:
